Dr. Maulana Karenga is the founder of this cultural institute and is also the founder of the seven principles of Kwanzaa (the Nguzo Saba in Swahili). The goal of the institute is similar to the goal of Kwanzaa: to strengthen the sense of community among African-Americans and to help one another become completely self-sufficient individuals who give back to their own communities. There are several historical and educational displays as well as art exhibits. The school provides several learning workshops as well as Saturday school for children during the school year.
