The brilliant idea of Portland artists Katherine Dunn and Bill Will, Street Wise is a series of granite blocks in the sidewalk, offering the engraved wit and wisdom of such names as Sartre and Shakespeare. There are lesser-known types immortalized here as well, such as the never to be forgotten philosopher who warned us all those years ago not to "step on a crack." There are prettier pieces of art around town, but this work perfectly captures the charm and offbeat rhythm of this city.
