Francis Xavier was canonized in 1622 and known as the patron saint of foreign missions of the Catholic Church. Reverend Farve built this twin-towered Gothic church in 1849 over part of the old Portuguese fort ruins and dedicated it to the Saint. Like thousands of universities and churches that carry the Saint's name, it serves to immortalize a simple, diligent and sacrificial life that forsook all the riches of this world so that others would not lose their souls.
