Spanning the Malacca River and connecting Town Square and Chinatown, the bridge was built in the late 19th century to replace one dating from the 17th century, which in turn had been built in place of the original stone bridge. This first stone bridge was strong enough to support the Sultan's elephants and wide enough to house the main bazaar. In 1511, the Portuguese conquered Malacca by storming the bridge from the shelter of a junk which they had floated upriver.
